Drawing & Painting programs
This program is broken up into three parts. Each part includes one workshop a week for four weeks. Part one of the painting program is designed to first introduce beginning painters to the medium of oil paint. In part 2 and 3, students will develop their technique and competency though various projects and create finished paintings. Though it is not necessary, students are strongly encouraged to take all three parts of the program in consecutive order.
In addition, enrolled students may attend our weekly, uninstructed Portrait Painting and Drawing sessions for only $5 a session.
painting part one: oil for beginners
Painting 1 of 3, February 2nd, 9th, 16th and 23rd, from 11-3pm: This 4 day course will cover the foundation of painting including drawing and composition, value, temperature and color. We will discuss, in depth, the various supplies and mediums that are at an oil painter's disposal. Through various painting projects we will explore how to render volume through the organization of value and color temperature. A limited number of colors are required for Painting Part 1 as the focus is to keep it simple and develop your competency with oils over the four weeks. $325 for all 4 classes. Students will be provided with a supply list prior to the class. Some supplies included.
painting part two:
traditional techniques
Painting 2 of 3, March 2nd, 16th, 23rd, and 30th, from 11-3pm: This 4 day course will introduce the basic techniques of the Old Masters by discussing various approaches towards representational painting that have been used over the centuries. Techniques to be discussed include: imprimatura, glazing, velatura, alla prima, scumbling, grisaille, chiaroscuro, sfumato, impasto. The class will focus on painting from a still life and incorporate the dead palette--a palette widely used from the time of the Lascaux cave paintings up until pre-industrial revolution. We will discuss the difference between the dead palette and the full, prismatic palette. Artists to be discussed will include Rembrandt, Franz Halls, Velazquez and others. We will develop the painting in steps from the imprimatura and wipe out (first layer of the painting) to a monochromatic grisaille, to glazing with the dead palette to finishing off with the full, prismatic palette in order to invigorate the painting with fresh, bold colors. $325 for all 4 classes. Students will be provided with a supply list prior to the class. Some supplies included.
painting part three:
color
Painting 3 of 3, April 6th, 9th, 13th and 20th, from 11-3: This 4 day course will focus on color and volume utilizing the cast collection, props and colored lighting. Representational painting is painting “light”. In a portrait, one does not paint the face but, rather, the light that bounces off the face, through the use of color. The great American painter and instructor, Charles Hawthorne, once said, “Have the courage to set down the colors”, [and form then] “takes care of itself if color is right.” Utilizing the classical sculpture, still life and colored lighting, students will study form through color temperature and work towards a finished painting. $325 for all 4 classes. Students will be provided with a supply list prior to the class. Some supplies included.
Drawing is often considered the foundation of visual art making, whether the art form be painting, printmaking ceramics, sculpture, installation etc. Drawing is a tool in which to explore both the subtleties and complexities of composition, and composition is the heart of any work of art. This program is broken up into three parts. Each part spans four workshops within a month. Similar to the Painting Program, the Drawing Program is designed to develop the student's technical competency through a step by step strategy. Though it is not necessary, students are strongly encouraged to take all three parts of the program in consecutive order.
In addition, enrolled students may attend our weekly, uninstructed Portrait Painting and Drawing sessions for only $5 a session.
drawing part one: the basics
Drawing Part 1 of 3, February 1st, 8th, 15th, and 22nd, from 11-3: This four day course will cover the basics of drawing and rendering form in both graphite and charcoal through the use of simple still lifes. We will cover mark making, value, proportion, perspective and composition. Throughout the course, the student will complete multiple drawings by utilizing a device used by artists throughout the centuries, including Caravaggio during the Baroque period, to control lighting and pull the subjects out of a dark background. $325 for all 4 classes. Students will be provided with a supply list prior to the class. Some supplies included.
drawing part two:
development/ techniques
Drawing Part 2 of 3, March 1st, 8th, 22nd and 29th, from 11-3: This 4 day course will add on to the techniques learned in Part 1 through complex still-lifes and compositions working towards a single, finished drawing. The student will develop their competency in rendering various types of surface textures, intricate forms and elaborate lighting scenarios. $325 for all 4 classes. Students will be provided with a supply list prior to the class. Some supplies included.
drawing part three:
cast drawing
Drawing Part 3 of 3, April 5th, 8th, 15th, and 19th, from 11-3: Draw from our collection of classical sculpture casts. Within a traditional art apprenticeship, no student's education is complete without first having drawn from the casts. Complete the Drawing Program by learning how to break down form into a series of shapes of tone, or shadow shapes- a process of study that is essential to rendering volume. In addition to multiple studies, the student will complete a fully rendered, tonal drawing of one of The Shop's casts. $325 for all four classes. Students will be provided with a supply list prior to the class. Some supplies included.
